Government and Politics
Bhutan's political system has developed from an absolute monarchy into a constitutional monarchy. The king is the head of the state. Executive power is exercised by the Lhengye Zhungtshog ( Council of Ministers). Legislative power was vested in both the government and the former grand national assembly.
In December 14th 2006, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk took over the throne upon his father's abdication.
In November 6th 2008, he became the world's youngest reigning monarch and head of the newest democracy. The new democratic system comprises of an upper and lower house.
